How do you install the Barnacle Guard Pylon Protector?
See Video - Pylon Protectors actually consist of 2 outer pieces which link together like a pin and socket at each end. They click and lock together around the pylon and are secured with zip ties for extra security.

They are designed to be fitted to the pylon at water level, below the brackets which hold the pontoon in place.

** It is not necessary to remove the pylon brackets, or to climb a ladder and slide the device down the pylon.

Who is using these Pylon Protectors?
Pylon Protectors are currently preventing marine growth from attaching to hundreds of pylons on residential canal blocks in the South East QLD and Sunshine Coast areas, as well as these Marinas [click]. We will also soon be installing Pylon Protectors on Volunteer Marine Rescue and Coast Guard wharfs

How long do Pylon Protectors last?
Wont they erode in the sun or salt water?

Barnacle Guard Pylon Protectors were developed and tested over a 2 year period before public release.

The blue exterior of the pylon protector is UV stabilised and rated at a life span of 5-10 years and the inner foam surface will perform for an average of 2-3 years.

Pylon Protectors are often shaded by the pontoon brackets or the pontoon itself

The foam inner surface of Pylon Protectors are made of a closed surface material which is also unaffected by salt water erosion.

We have made certain that all components are durable and will stand up to Australian conditions.

Do they work on concrete pylons?
Wont the concrete damage the foam?

Barnacle Guard Pylon Protectors most definately perform on concrete pylons.

As the device is driven by water movement there is not enough pressure forcing the foam against the concrete to cause any significant stress to the foam, it wiill simply bounce away if pushed towards the pylon by water movement.

Will it remove existing growth from the pylons?
While it is possible that pylon protectors can remove tidemarks from pylons, it takes high pressure cleaning to remove any solid marine growth. Pylon Protectors are specifically designed to prevent marine growth, not remove it.

** It is common for products designed to remove barnacles to be fixed to the docks or pylon brackets, they not only scrape some growth from the pylons, but to also cause damage to the pylon itself... We know, we've tried them all...

Cross Section
Cross section shows the area in contact with the pylon.

"I notice that the ring has a circular cross section. So when it rubs against the flat face surface of a pylon, it won't be able to clean or rub part of the pylon because of the circular cross section, right?"
The pylon protector moves up and down on the water and scrubs the pylon surface. As it moves up and down it covers the same area regardless of cross section shape, and contact area.

The shape of the cross section also varies depending on the size of the pylon. For the smaller pylons the full size foam insert is used, which is the circular cross section pictured (left).

For larger pylons we use a different foam insert which has a "C" shaped cross section, which has more surface contact with the pylon, yet both work equally effective...

What stops marine growth attaching to the underside of the Pylon Protector?
Marine growth does attach only to the underside of the Pylon Protector, which is constantly in the water

It does not effect the flotation or the performance at all, as can easily be removed if necessary.

Is the foam insert the same as a Pool Noodle?
This coincidence is often brought to our attention. Our foam insert is very similar to a popular foam pool toy. While being similar in characteristics, and manufactured using a similar process, our foam is closed surface, non-absorbent, and will not erode, flake, or crumble like the pool noodles. Ours lasts far longer in the sun and salt water, and has a higher density and floatation.

In an effort to prove Barnacle Guard Pylon Protectors out-perform these pool toys we trialed them...
